Fix: Your signature could not be added to the document if your signature requires a smart card

Fix: Your signature could not be added to the document if your signature requires a smart card . Your signature could not be added to the document. If your signature requires a smart card, ensure that your card reader is installed correctly.

I have similar problem (message: “Your signature could not be added to the document.  If your signature requires a smart card, ensure that your card reader is installed correctly.”), when signing document by MS Office 2010  on Windows 7.
Private key and certificates chain stored on  Aladdin eToken PRO (Java). CA certificate installed as Trusted Root CA. CryptoProvider: eToken Base Cryptographic Provider
But digital signing completes successfully on:
MS Office 2010, MS Windows XP SP3
MS Office 2007, MS Windows 7
MS Office 2007, MS Windows XP SP3
Any ideas?

Per your description, when users try to insert signature in Excel files, an error will pop up. To further investigate this issue, could you please provide some information for me?

  1. In the error message, it mentioned “smart card”, may I know that whether your company use Smart Card?

  2. If yes, does the problem happen on other actions which needs smart cards?

  3. If they create a new file, will the same problem happen?

  4. Does these users have the same version of Excel client? A screenshot of your Office Product Information(open Excel >File>Account>capture a screenshot of the Product Information column)

Appreciate your cooperation in advance.

Since you mentioned that all the users have the same version of OS build and Excel application, it is possible that some related component is corrupted. So that the error occurs. Given this situation, we suggest that you can try to Completely uninstall Office with the uninstall support tool and Download and re-install Office to check the result.

I had this problem and discovered a solution that helped me. I don’t know if it will help you, but something to check.

So, when the Sign window came up and I clicked Change, I found I had two signature options to choose from. I selected the more recent one that reflects my Outlook email address (rather than the default one that came up).

It gave me a message about not being able to verify my address, but I said to use it anyway, and it worked!

Here’s the message I clicked Yes to:

If that doesn’t help, I don’t know if there is something about “unlocking” a table or cell that it is in, but that’s what a co-worker suggested before I stumbled on the solution that worked for me (she was using Excel, and I was using Word, so I don’t know what she was talking about). Smile.
