Symptom

On a large number of HP-model notebook computers that are running Windows 7, you may incorrectly receive the following warning message from the Windows battery meter:

Consider replacing the battery.

Additionally, a red “X” may appear over the battery icon in the notification area. However, the battery still has enough health. This issue is known to occur on DV9000 and DV 67000 series laptops.

Reason

This issue occurs on notebook models, which were not designed for Windows 7, because the system software (BIOS) incorrectly reports the designed battery capacity to the operating system. The message “Considering battery replacement” is displayed when the final full charge capacity is less than 40% of the reported design battery capacity. The final full charge capacity and design capacity battery report were obtained from Windows Solid ACPI System (BIOS). On older HP notebook models, the battery’s design capacity was incorrectly reported as 88,800mWh even though the actual design’s battery capacity was lower. This software error can cause a “Consider replacing battery” warning to display incorrectly when the final full charge capacity is still more than 40% of the actual designed battery capacity.

  • Lithium batteries wear overtime and usage.
  • Laptops are provided with enough hardware to maintain and monitor the battery parameters.
  • There’s a parameter called Wear Level.
  • Wear level reduces batteries capacity to store energy.
  • When Wear Level reaches more than 60% its dangerous use battery.
  • Irregular voltage supply, reduced charge and discharge time are the symptoms of Worn Lithium battery.
  • These worn out batteries may damage your laptop hardware or could lead to fire when heavy power draw causes heating of battery internals due to reduced voltages and increased current.
  • Softwares like HWinfo, Batterycare tells you batteries wear level.
